too many dreamers, LOOKING FOR THE ONES THAT LAST |
[/div] ted was so close. close to having andromeda opening up to him. she had already told him that she never liked going home for the holidays. for ted, that wasn't entirely new information. or, it was, because andromeda had never said that directly to his face. now he just needed to know why. ted felt like he was intimidating her, for her, not necessarily in a good way, but he still felt like this was needed for her. ted knew exactly what her game was and he happened to know that she was attracted to him. but she couldn't give into her lust and feelings, because she was a pureblood and on top of that, she was the middle daughter of the purists, druella and cygnus black. those two were the biggest muggleborn-haters, ted had ever heard about. and sure, that did put a lot of pressure on andromeda. but ted sincerely hoped she was better than her slap-in-the-face-worthy sisters, bellatrix and narcissa. andromeda was in ravenclaw, for god's sake! that made her a lot different than her sisters, she was just too blind to see that. ted could see that it was hard, but her cousin was sirius black, who had left home when he was only sixteen years old. sirius never had a problem with muggleborns, ted and him were decent friends. of course, ted had a minor problem with the way sirius treated girls. ted would never do that, not to anyone.
right now, he wanted andromeda to open up completely. they were in the ravenclaw common room, not in the great hall. she could say anything here. no one would judge her, because in here there wasn't any slytherins or anything. everyone in here was equal. ted was a muggleborn, andromeda was a pureblood, but most of the time he couldn't care less. it was bloody strange that what kind of blood you were, had to determine who you were going to marry. not said, that ted would want to marry andromeda, at least not now. maybe someday, but he wanted to have equal rights as anyone else who was pureblood. ted still had her quill in his back pocket, but now he took it up and showed it to her.
he then walked over and sat in one of the big couches and patted the spot next to him. she could join him if she wanted to, ted couldn't force her though. the quill was quite pretty, he understood why she treasured it so much. he started playing with it between his fingers. "dromeda, if you want your quill back, you'll have to start actually talking to me. it's fine that you don't like going back home for the holidays.. but why? why do you feel that way?" he asked and poked her gently with the quill. ted just really wanted to know. he was good at listening, at least he had been told. "of course, i didn't meant you wanted to be like sirius. i really don't like what he does with those girls. i meant in that sense, that i feel you would like to break free from your family. just tell me why, and then you'll get your quill again." ted didn't wanted to push it already. he couldn't ask her to the ball already. He was going to be the absolute death of her. In all her life Andromeda had never met someone as insufferably persistent as Theodore Tonks. He had invested his time in constantly making her feel angry, self-conscious, and upset by taking her things and telling her that she wanted to leave her family. Her family may not have been among the most reasonable. They may not have given her buckets of attention. They may not have outwardly shown affection. But they were her family and if there one trait that Andromeda had inherited from the house of Black, it was loyalty. She was born with these people, and despite how they treated her (and others), she couldn't help but feel very attached to them. Narcissa wasn't bad when she was on her own and Bellatrix... Well Bella had a certain charm about her when she wasn't blasting people out of her way... It was true that Sirius claimed that he had nothing to do with the family any more, but even he maintained that strong sense of loyalty that seemed to be an innate feature in every member of her family. Ted spoke about letting them go like they were a pair of old socks. He positively infuriated her.
But that wasn't the only thing that Andromeda found unsettling when it came to Ted. To her complete dismay, she found him attractive. She would never admit it to anybody else in the world other than herself, but she did and she had never felt so irritated and so torn about anyone in her life. She found herself doing more than just glaring at his eyes and to her horror, she found that she actually enjoyed the sound of his Irish voice. But despite this, she wanted to keep as far away from him as possible. Even if Bella claimed that she didn't care for Andromeda, she knew that her elder sister was keeping a watchful eye and Ted was just... loud. Not to mention very touchy with her. If Bellatrix had seen what he had done to her the other night, give her a quick kiss against her will, surely she would have been disowned? She found herself being unladylike-- shrieking even, like Bella, and that's not who Andromeda was. He also seemed to appear when Andromeda's guard was completely down so that her eyes would widen and her frosty look was momentarily non existent before she could shove her confusion away.
In pursuit of her uncle Alphard's quill, Ted told Andromeda that he would give it back if she told him one of her "secrets," and perhaps it was because he had frustrated her and made her weary to the point of telling him that she never much liked going home for the holidays. It wasn't a lie-- it also wasn't a big secret-- but she didn't know what possessed her to tell him that because now he was pressing for more information, like why she didn't like going home. The answer was simple, in her opinion, the atmosphere wasn't quite welcoming. In fact, she was more relaxed and well-treated by her friends at Hogwarts. But she didn't think he'd get that out of her tonight-- nor would he get anything else. He had asked her to meet him in the Ravenclaw common room for her quill and she reluctantly agreed.
When she walked into the common room, she saw her quill in his hands and he motioned for her to come sit next to him. Expressionless, she sat beside him, crossing her legs and remaining silent until he spoke. "Dromeda, if you want your quill back, you'll have to start actually talking to me. It's fine that you don't like going back home for the holidays... But why? Why do you feel that way?"
Why on earth did he want to know? What could he possibly do with that information? She stayed silent, her eyes downcast even when he poked her with the quill. His voice was gentle and she didn't want to look into his eyes. She knew the look he gave her when his voice was like that and they were sitting too close.. She'd give herself away. Andromeda was suddenly feeling very vulnerable. He spoke again: "Of course, I didn't meant you wanted to be like Sirius. I really don't like what he does with those girls. I meant in that sense, that I feel you would like to break free from your family. Just tell me why, and then you'll get your quill again."
She listened to him speak and sighed quietly, "They're my family, Ted," she said, "and despite how they treat me..." The sense of vulnerability was increasing to the point where she felt cornered by him. "I... I don't like going home for the holidays because..." she hesitated then continued, "they never really cared for me after I was sorted into Ravenclaw." It was not secret that Cygnus and Druella Black hadn't been pleased with their middle daughter when they found out about her Hogwarts house, but Andromeda felt that she had given Ted a glimpse of her home life and she was barely comfortable talking about that to even Sirius. Feeling awful, she turned to look at him, her eyes almost in tears, but she managed to hold out her hand and complacently say, "My quill please." .

too many dreamers, LOOKING FOR THE ONES THAT LAST |
[/div] ted was still thinking about whether or not to give her the quill, but a promise was a promise. and ted was indeed a man of his word. especially when it came to andromeda. he would never do anything whatsoever to hurt her. ted just really wanted to know why. but it was clear even before she said it. ted just wanted to hear it from her self.
as she started talking, he listened carefully. and nodded at the right moments. it felt like andromeda had been an outcast in her own family, and ted found that to be incredibly sad. but could he do anything about it? could he go and beat up her family for being a bunch of idiots? well, technically, he could. but that would also mean that they probably would avada kedavra his ass, and he wasn't interested in that. he just wanted to tell andromeda that everything would be alright, but somehow he was sure that it wasn't the case. she had been in ravenclaw for six years and it wasn't like he could go and find the sorting hat and place it on top of her head and make it change it's decision. ted had been told that whatever the sorting hat decided, it decided for a reason. there was a reason why she was in ravenclaw. ted sort of figured that it was because she didn't hated muggleborns as much as her sisters.
ted thought for a moment, then looked at her and could hear her voice trembling a bit. andromeda was close to tears, maybe he had pushed it too far already? ted bit his lowerlip, handing her the quill. a promise was a promise. but right after he gave it to her, he pulled her in for a gentle hug. just in case she needed to cry a little. and ted wouldn't blame her if she wanted to. he never had any kind of that pressure on his shoulders, so he really had no idea how this felt like. he just knew that he felt really sorry for andromeda. ted kissed her hair, swaying her a little bit. "dromeda, if there is anything i can do.." he said and still held her close. ted felt so sorry for her. all that pressure.
he looked at her, thinking about what to say. he could say "screw them. they haven't treated you right, leave them." but that was probably a bit too harsh. he cleared his throat. "i know they are your family, dromeda.. but what kind of family treats their daughter and sister like you have been treated? i can't imagine how hard it must be for you, but honestly.. you need to do something. stand up against them. tell them that being a ravenclaw have changed you to the better. the better than bellatrix and narcissa.." ted said, trying to be reasonable. he then kissed her hair again, swaying again. Why did he make her feel so unguarded? Andromeda was usually quite good at maintaining an expressionless face, she was good at being difficult to read, but not right now, in front of Ted. He had forced her to confront something that she usually bricked up in her head, but now the issue that she had shoved into the darkness seemed to be facing her full on. He finally gave her the quill, placing it in her open hand, but although she'd been set on getting it back from him since Merlin-knew-when, her fingers wouldn't grasp it. She heard him say something, but her ears began to softly ring and a cold feeling washed over her body. Her face fell expressionless in concentration and she didn't dare talk back to him in fear that any small movement would send tears flowing down her face. She was hurt and she felt terribly alone like there was nobody out there in the world who she would ever feel that warmth from.
But he held her. He took her into his arms like she had never been held before and kissed her hair as he swayed them back and forth. She didn't hold him back-- she couldn't move-- but she allowed his every movement and buried her face in his shoulder. Finally, like the rains grace a vacant desert, the tears began to fall and she wept quietly. He spoke again:
"I know they are your family, Dromeda.. But what kind of family treats their daughter and sister like you have been treated? I can't imagine how hard it must be for you, but honestly... You need to do something. Stand up against them. Tell them that being a Ravenclaw have changed you to the better. The better than Bellatrix and Narcissa..."
She never allowed herself to think about the true way her family felt about her. She knew it was too ugly. She never wanted to think of how wounded she was when her parents didn't want to see her come home for the holidays during her first year. She didn't want to think of the disgusted look in Bella's eyes when she called Andromeda a blood traitor and how even when Bella didn't care, Andromeda felt her hateful presence controlling her life. She didn't want to think of what would happen to her after Hogwarts... But Ted made her think about it. He made her want to make it all stop. She stayed silent for a while and then, refusing to come out from the safety of his broad stature, she shook her head at his words. She whispered to him the secret. The answer that she didn't even wish to think of herself. "They will kill me."
