It was still relatively early in the morning. Regulus had already attended morning classes and was now taking a moment to catch up on reading for DADA. By far, this was his favorite subject so he did not mind that his friends glowered at him after he told them that he wished to read instead of going to the Great Hall for a snack. He had enough food this morning to last him at least until dinner. If his friends wanted to scrounge around in the kitchens like dogs looking for a hand out they could. He had better things to do. Sitting with his back pressed against the cool stone, Regulus propped his leg up and rested his book on his knee. His dark, coffee-colored eyes scanned the words on the page, soaking in todays lesson like a sponge. He wanted to be the best in lessons and stand out among the rest. He hadn't known just how competitive he was until he began attending Hogwarts. He enjoyed scoring the highest and excelling in areas of magic that others only dreamed of. He wasn't sure how much he had accomplished during his five years, but he liked to believe that he knew more about dark magic than some seventh years. The thought brought a cocky smile to his lips as he read. Today lesson was about curses that caused bodily harm. They would not practice them on each other of course, but they would be made aware that curses like these existed out there. As he read, wand in hand, he flicked his wand and mouthed the words. He had already learned nonverbal spells so he made sure not to conjure something nasty in case someone passed. It wasn't like he cared about harming someone else, but having to explain himself to the head master wasn't something he cared to waste his valuable time doing today. So he studied, oblivious to the going ons around him. Entirely consumed in his book, he didn't realize that someone was standing near by until they spoke to him. Tag: OPEN

Sure, he's almost always late, except for that time or two when he wanted to surprise his professor by being on time, never early though since he's no Ravenclaw, but he's never missed a class. Why should he? Classes are a good source for prank materials and other Marauder-related things (Where else do you think he got the idea to be an animagus? A book?) and make perfect alibis for timed pranks, as soon as they learned how to do those. The point is, whenever you see him outside of the classrooms during the daytime, it was either he was taking his time to get to his next class or he didn't have a class at the moment. And this time, it was the latter.
Usually, he would be with his friends right now, planning or creating mischief and chaos, but they have class at the moment and so he was bored. And he hated being bored. Being bored usually gets him into trouble or something. And worse of all, he was alone. That definitely spells trouble for one James Potter since without the rest of his friends, he can't pass or share the blame, when he's with either Sirius or Peter, for the trouble he's gonna cause or get dragged away by Remus before he gets into trouble.
So alone and bored, he went to the courtyard to get some fresh air. He would've gotten his broom, but it was all the way up in the Gryffindor tower and he was already on the first floor so he didn't bother. But he should've because the weather was perfect for flying. The winds weren't too strong, the sun wasn't too bright, and the temperature wasn't too hot nor cold. Like he said, perfect. He pondered on it for a few moments before deciding that the weather was simply too perfect to not go flying so he turned around and went back to the castle to get his broom. Besides, getting to the tower wasn't too much trouble with all the secret pathways he knew by heart. The only reason they still have the map is because it was convenient to know where everyone is while they're setting up their pranks and all.
As he ran his hand through his hair, he noticed that there was something bumping into his head. He glanced up and saw that he had a halo above his head. "Goddammit Black, you bloody bastard. What did you do this time?" he muttered, knowing that the halo was another jibe at his middle name, not noticing that there was another Black sitting nearby who heard everything he just said. | [atrb=width,100] words ,

"Goddammit Black, you bloody bastard. What did you do this time?"Regulus' book fell against his lap and he looked around, spotting James Potter not even ten feet away. His first instinct was to grab his wand, but he didn't think he'd need it. Potter seemed to be consumed with a magical halo above his head. How completely ironic seeing as the boy thought he was a god send when in actuality he was a pain up everyone's arse. Someone thought it was funny. It was quite hilarious knowing that someone had jinxed the prat without him even realizing it. His mention of a Black captured his attention. Who was that unlucky person? Narcissa and Bellatrix wouldn't waste their time with silly charms. Bellatrix would curse him with a cruciatus curse before even considering something less torturous. Andromeda seemed to adore James too much to harm him. The bloody fool. That only left himself and Sirius. Seeing as he had nothing to do with it he guessed he referred to Sirius. He had to make sure though. "I hope you were not referring to me just now," Regulus snapped. He closed his book and turned so that both of his feet rested on the ground. He eyed the magical halo with a smirk on his lips. "Or perhaps my brother is the victim of your cruel words. Bastard...really? That describes you I think." This would make the second time one of Sirius' 'friends' tossed his family's name around like the boy wasn't one of them. Sure, his name had been burned off the family tree, but the same blood that flowed in his veins flowed within Sirius. That alone made him forever a Black. Regulus slid off his perch and moved toward James. His arms were crossed over his chest lazily. A few students stopped to watch them, yet most were too busy going about their own lives to care about what happened between them. "I quite like the halo, Potter. A improvement I think considering the foul gas cloud you had lingering behind you the last few years." He walked closer, his nose upturned. "I see you've finally rid yourself of it. Bathe lately?"

Why was it that when the other Marauders weren't around he always gets into trouble? And not the ordinary type of trouble, which usually means problems with teachers, pranks, and friends, that he can usually get out of. No. It has to be the type of trouble where either he or the other person would end up in the Hospital Wing. Or make Lily angry at him again for one reason or another. It's not as if he intentionally picks fights, they just come to him naturally, apparently. Except for Snape because he's always the exception since he's a bastard. And Lily likes him for some reason even though half the fights that Lily blame him for were Snivellus' fault, not his. Not that she would ever listen to him about that. She always took Snape's side.
But moving on, he was at the very least thankful that it wasn't the other Blacks that heard his comments. Narcissa may be a little nice about it, maybe, Andromeda would know immediately that it wasn't her that he was referring to, and Bellatrix. Well, even though the other Blacks may be better options, there are always worse. Way worse. Like he would be totally fighting for his life or risking something important, like his dignity or headboy position, if the wrong Black heard the comment. But Regulus still hearing the comment was bad enough.
James turned towards Regulus, looking calm even though his halo started shining. "You'd wish I were referring to you," he replied cooly despite his irritation with the halo. But he couldn't show that to Regulus. He had to keep his cool and all. "But we both know that you can't do timed spells yet. Or ever. But it's alright, we know that you don't have the brains of the family. As if your family had any to begin with," he said, with a small smile, annoyed at the smirk on the younger boy's face. He didn't mind insulting all of the Blacks since he always told off Sirius at his lack of brains at times, well most of the time. But that's what friends were for, right? Besides, he would defend the mutt if Regulus insulted him.
He rolled his eyes when he was referred to as a bastard. He's heard worse things come out from the mouth of one Lily Evans. In fact, his friends call him bastard whenever they feel like it. It practically meant nothing to him now. Even when it came from an annoying brat, even though Regulus wasn't that much younger than him. "You jealous? I could always give you one. Or you want something more appropriate for you?" he said, readying his wand at a moment's notice. He can't really cast the first spell without getting into huge trouble, but he can always retaliate. | [atrb=width,100] words ,
