too many dreamers, LOOKING FOR THE ONES THAT LAST |
[/div] itchy, uncomfortable, absolutely dreadful. severus felt like a total stiff in his dress robes, glancing back at himself through the mirror in his dorm room. he frowned at his reflection. at least he’d fixed the itches, or .. most of them anyway. he would never admit this out loud, but alice had been right. he’d taken his robes out of the bottom of his trunk – since they had not been used for at least two years, they’d gotten quite dusty. nonetheless, he’d tried a charm, and been able to spot the itching powder. for the most part it was gone now, though the back of his neck seemed to have a rather stubborn patch, but in comparison, this would be a small price to pay. yes, someone had slipped itching powder in his dress robes like alice had assumed. but severus wasn’t exactly …well off. he couldn’t go off and buy new robes every time some jackass (who he could probably assume as one of the marauders, though the slytherins in his dorm could just as easily be the masterminds of this). if it had not been lily to ask, he would not have been caught dead going to this stupid event. why was it even called a ball besides to make it sound significantly more important than it was. who’s idiotic idea was it to have an opening ball anyway? who made this stuff up? oh yes, let’s make all the already awkward teenagers a little more awkward! let’s make them get all dressed up and uncomfortable so that we may convince them the essentialism of getting a date and then we will throw them in a giant room together and ah, best of all, we will make them dance! but not just any dance! formal dance! ah, yes, this is the only way. we cannot let this opportunity to go to waste. severus snape is already in his seventh year, this could be our last chance to embarrass him!
but of course, it was lily, and he’d never actually be able to say no to her. despite the fact that she had randomly asked him and despite the fact that he absolutely detested events such as these, how could he ever refuse it? besides, somewhere in his mind he was much more than pleased that she had chosen him. he supposed, he really ought not to get his hopes too high about it but it was hard not to. what could she really mean by it, inviting him to the ball? was it really just to get james off of her back, or did she think it meant a little more. he hoped it would be the latter, though she hadn’t exactly said it in so many words. she’d mostly just told him that they were going to the ball together. had barely even asked really. probably knew his answer, even though he’d done his best to appear nonchalant about the idea. not wanting to say yes too fast was more like his actual reaction. he really didn’t want to disappoint her tonight, he wanted to have a good time, but he was more than slightly terrified that something would come up and ruin their plans entirely. didn’t that always happen with nights that were meant to be perfect? but it was just a hunch after all.
he threw himself one last nervous glance into the mirror, patting his hair back a little. heck, he’d even tried to take care of it for the occasion and he didn’t suppose it looked too shabby. he’d definitely taken some time to prepare himself today (a few hours) and perhaps it paid off a little. he also used the time to give himself some necessary prep talks. severus scratched the back of his neck, the lone reminder of the itching powder. he’d need to remember not to spend the rest of his night itching the stupid thing, especially not around the other slytherin boys or the marauders to give them the satisfaction of seeing they’d gotten to him…though, he rather hoped he would not seeing either tonight. he stepped outside of the common room, ignoring the few jabs he got, though he knew at least one of them made a “YOU WASHED YOUR HAIR” joke. he only walked faster, wasn’t going to bother him tonight, he wouldn’t let it. he was going to meet lily outside of the gardens and that’s where he stood, more nervous and uncomfortable than he’d ever been before in his life, yet impatient for the night to begin.

the fact that she was supposed to be meeting severus in only a half hour had gone right over lily's head. and it wasn't like she'd even been doing anything special, just spending some time with her fellow gryffindors in the common room. sadly she'd forgotten to ask someone for the time - which was pretty unusual for her her since she was always one of the most on time/tact people she knew - and thus she was now going to be inevitably late. unless of course she rushed through her preparations, which was highly unlikely since she'd had it all planned out for a while now. which was partially the reason for making severus go with her to the ball. of course also had suggested it, and it'd been a great suggestion at that. hopefully it would cause james to back off for a little bit, and it also meant she wasn't going stag to the ball, which would've looked absolutely terrible. she also wanted someone to be impressed, and severus was always quite good with moral support.
lily pressed a brush in some powder, dabbing a little bit on her face, mostly on the circles under her eyes which seemed to have made it clear they weren't going to be vanishing naturally anytime soon. setting the brush down she picked up the small vanity mirror on her bed and stared for a while. she rarely wore makeup, and even this small amount of powder, barely noticeable to anyone except her, made her feel out of sorts. glancing at the rest of the makeup goodies lying on her bed, most of them borrowed from friends since she hadn't actually thought to bring makeup with her to hogwarts - though by now she probably should have learned. pushing the makeup to the side, lily decided she could do without most of it, but not before grabbing some light brown and black eyeliner just for some contrast.
thinking like this made her feel like such a girly-girl. lily really couldn't deny she wasn't one, but she wasn't a vain one at the very least. generally she could really care less about how she came off to people in the beauty department and just usually brushed her eye, put on her robes, and that was that. if she would ever be asked to do a beauty tutorial, it'd fail miserably and it'd most likely be ten minutes of her trying to figure out how to use the lip liner correctly. the first time she'd handled lip liner, she had put it on her eyes thinking it was eye liner. apparently that'd been a major mistake since petunia had started rolling around in a fit of laughter and asked if her eyes were bleeding. that actually might've been one of the memories which haunted her about makeup to this day, afraid she might put something on incorrectly and everyone would burst out laughing at her.
turning her attention back to the task in front of her, lily pulled up the dress she'd picked out. it was a light green - similar to her eyes, and simply designed while flattering the shape of her body. since it was only severus and she wasn't actually trying to impress anyone in particular, she hadn't wanted to wear a very extravagant or eye catching dress, since then it would just be a waste. pulling on the dress, she strapped it up in the back and twirled around a bit. not the twirliest of all dresses but even still it was quite nice and she was sure severus would at least enjoy it. she put on the necklace her mother had given her a few days before leaving, along with some golden heels stolen from petunia's closet and some earrings and a bracelet she been waiting to use. altogether she liked the ensemble.
combing through her hair quickly, she picked it up a number of times in different ways, trying to figure out what to do with it. when nothing came to her, she just let it flop and decided it was better down than up in some weird last minute looking bun. quickly making sure her heels were strapped so she wouldn't trip and fall, which was likely to happen at some point, lily rushed out of the gryffindor tower, bumping into a number of people on the way which caused a number of grumbles but nothing too bad. finally she heard music floating around - she had to be at least twenty minutes late when she finally got to the outside perimeter of the gardens. glancing around lily found sev easily with his dark hair and walked up to him.
suppressing a giggle, the sight of her best friend in dress robes looking so unlike himself had to be the highlight of her hogwarts years thus far. he did look quite strapping, and she couldn't help but feel bad that he seemed so unwilling to open himself up to people, otherwise he really could be quite the ladie's man. then again that'd probably be an entirely different severus, one who may not even be her friend. well doesn't someone look handsome. she grinned nudging his arm, snapping herself out of her thoughts. notes, lol 905 words or something and yet it sux wooo will make pretty soon

too many dreamers, LOOKING FOR THE ONES THAT LAST |
[/div] okay, so she was late. sev wasn’t going to freak out about this, people were late all the time! severus was personally never one of those people, but sure, it happened. things happened that were out of your control. you can’t find your dress robes, lost all your clean socks, lost track of time, a cat steps on your toe. it was all possible, and it could easily keep you from being where you needed to be for a few minutes. lily was his best friend, on any other night severus would not have minded nearly as much. tonight was just … different. he was jittery, and this of course would explain his paranoia. he knew lily would be on her way soon, that she had most likely been caught up doing something or another and had forgotten the time. but he could not help himself, he was nervous and the thought of her perhaps, “standing him up” came to mind a few times while he waited. it was shot down immediately of course, by his prominently more rational side, but it as there nonetheless.
it would be nowhere near lily’s genuine personality though to tell him to come when she didn’t mean it. she read him like a book. she knew dances and balls such as these were nowhere near sev’s comfort zone, so she must therefore know that he was only here because of her. that he would never attend one of these silly events had she not asked him to. for her to not show up tonight might imply that something serious was holding her back, and this in itself, meant another thing to worry about. he didn’t want to start worrying now for her tardiness, even though she wasn’t usually the unpunctual type.
but severus did not even want to imagine the agony of having to see the marauders’ faces if he had actually shown up here alone. no, definitely not. he could hear the snide remarks and cheap jokes now, and he was lucky that so far, everyone that had passed him up until this moment were not the type to make comments. severus was usually a very rational person, so he had very little experience with thoughts like these. he knew some people who paced when they were nervous, or people who rambled or talked to themselves. severus on the other hand, merely stood in the same spot for the twenty or so minutes that he thought he would be here alone. it was his hands that he couldn’t keep track of. one second in his pockets, and then back out to be twiddled in front of him, and then back to his pockets. he stared in the direction he supposed her most likely to come from. it was stupid, silly paranoia. absolutely useless, but severus couldn’t help it.
he took a deep breath suddenly as a new figure joined the crowd. and there she was, lily evans. his nerves immediately subsidized to nearly fifty percent of their previous magnitude, and though they were still very much present, a calming sensation twiddled through him. time sped up again as she came to stand ahead of him. he held his breath for as long as he could before he breathed out slowly, hoping lily would not be able to catch his shallow breathing. his heart caught in his throat, beating much too fast for someone that he ought to think of as merely his best friend. merlin, she looked beautiful, she was practically blinking with the lights ahead of them. at that green, why it was the precise colour of her eyes. his lips parted, smiling towards her in what could possibly be the biggest smile he’d ever produced in his life. handsome? him? ha! as if he’d ever been called that in his life, and yet here stood lily evans herself, complimenting him!
he straightened his dress robes a little, trying a grin on for size as she nudged him. perhaps, this would be the night that he exclaimed to lily how he truly felt about her, but he really needed to take this slow. still, he could not help himself. ”I’m not nearly as handsome as you look beautiful” he said in his signature low tone. he tried to make it sound as though he was teasing, as lily was, though he couldn’t help that a bit of his voice seemed to crack in trying to kid. he cleared his throat a little, and grinned with the corner of his mouth. ”i remember seeing this in those old muggle movies you made me watch, is this what we’re supposed to do?” he held out an elbow for her to link in with him, not entirely sure if he was even doing it right. people linked arms with their dates, right? his heart skipped a beat. she must know how silly this entire occasion was. ”shall we?” he asked, before leading them into the ball.

lily tucked a lock of her hair behind her ear watching as the corner of severus' mouth turned up to produce a large grin, one which he seemed to rarely be able to produce nowadays. she couldn't help but let herself grin as well, and let out a small laugh, you know what? if you smiled more often, you'd be much more appealing to girls. she winked and then thanked him for the compliment. but what she had said was true, he was quite handsome as it was, though very few other students seemed to really notice it. but when he smiled, lily somehow could see more than one girl tripping over themselves to get a chance to dance with him. as long as they weren't turned off by his rather guarded personality, something which lily never could quite understand. while she loved having severus around, she couldn't help but feel sorry for him sometimes. she didn't want to make it seem like she was his only friend, yet very often it felt that way to her, and she wanted him to have more than just her. she just really wanted to see him happy.
sometimes lily did regret getting into gryffindor. but while she regretted it, there was no denying that she felt as though this was where she belonged. the first year was the hardest though, trying to make friends wasn't something that came naturally to her until about the second year when she was really able to open up. she sometimes felt the frustration of her first year at hogwarts was severus' fault. she'd grown use to always having him to fall back on and got used to his somewhat pessimistic personality, which seemed to have nearly made it into her bloodstream. but blaming severus was wrong, she knew this. it had been her fault. regardless, that she'd let severus's own personality mold with hers. and all of that was in the past anyway. they were in their seventh year now, and all lily wanted for severus right now was to open himself up, get some friends so he could manage by himself in the real world. because she had no idea if she'd talk to him after this year, if she became an auror and he became some sort of potions master. or even if she'd just be in contact with him in anyway. the future, though, was a subject she didn't particularly feel like touching on. now right now, anyway.
as severus held out his arm, she linked her own arm on and gave him a rather childish smile at his chivalry, happy he seemed to remember the muggle movies they'd watched together. no matter how much he'd complained about them. muggle movies, in her opinion, were only the best. even if most of the plots were horrible. especially the ones about magic - how terrible off they were about the real magical world. lily glanced up at her friend before walking forth into the gardens, towards the ball, we shall.
the night air was cool and breezy, and everything seemed to be in place. the music was fun, and nice. though there were already a couple of fourth years running away crying their eyes out. the drama these dances brought forth was really just ridiculous, something which lily hoped would never cross her path. aside from the whole james-loving-her thing, which was just old drama anyway. and she didn't even consider it drama anymore since she'd turned him down so many times. though she was starting to envision herself growing old and unmarried with a hundred cats, if she didn't start setting her eyes on someone or opening herself up for a little more than a couple dates.
waving to a couple of her friends, all of whom had dates, she suddenly had an overwhelming feeling of thankfulness for severus, who hadn't even planned on coming to this ball in the first place. and the way she'd asked him, hadn't even really been put as a question, more as a statement. though there was a little voice inside of her which had told her it wouldn't matter how she put it, severus would probably say yes to whatever she asked him to do. as long as it wasn't dangerous and put her or himself at risk. though even this seemed to be scratching at his borders, since she knew for certain a ball was about the last place severus really wanted to be at any given time. but if lily had gone alone, she was sure there'd be rumors about her going stag to the beginning of the year ball, and rumors really weren't her thing, no matter how hard she tried to ignore them.
lily turned towards severus quickly, almost tripping over her own feet, not used to heels, and running into his chest. oh sorry! i just wanted to thank you for being my date and warding off certain people and thank you for dressing so nicely and thank you for being such a good friend and thank you for not making me go stag to the ball for which i'm sure there'd be a lot of odd looking stares coming my way if i had and thank you for not complaining about how late i was and and and... she realized she'd said that all in one breath and had to shake herself out of her run on thoughts before taking one big breath in and then it again before recomposing herself and smiling turning back towards the ball, thanks, severus. notes, OH MY GOD I'M SORRY THIS IS TERRIBLE. it's just kinda bumpy and stuff cuz razz and third were distracting me on skype. blame them.

[/div] if you smiled more often, you'd be much more appealing to girls. the lightest possible shade of pink nudged over the sides of his face, a blush - one that could rarely be produced by severus snape, around someone who was not lily evans. she alone had this power over him, but it was mostly irony that made him smile now back at her. that she would be the one to tell him this of all things when she obviously did not know that he was really only focused on trying to be appealing to one girl in particular; the same girl who looked over at him with those big green eyes to tell him he ought to smile more. it was not in him to imagine someone as grand and perfect as she was to him so why would he bother to try to get himself onto the good side of any other? the rest of them could wait, severus did not care how appealing he was to any other girl. he couldn’t simply … be the way he was with lily with anyone else. this one, true form was always tucked into the very corner of his being. ”when have I ever focused on being appealing?” he replied back sarcastically, grinning a little still.
he knew she had always wanted him to get out more, to see more people, to trust – lily herself was good at these things, while severus himself was undoubtedly not. lily was perhaps too good. she had this way of seeing goodness in people without being naive. while severus admired it, he knew he could never mimic this kindness. he had tried to come to terms with the idea that it was probably in him naturally, to be of the more guarded sort, but he could not help knowing it was probably not this at all. but perhaps, those people might not deserve his trust. severus had known so many hypocrites, had met so many just in the course of his seven years at hogwarts. he didn’t want to associate himself with these… cowards, liars that they often were. even at home, severus had known his father to be a very haughty man, he’d known from a ridiculously young age that his father could not be trusted. he walked in and out on them more times than severus could count with his two hands. and his poor, useless mother, why, he saw her yes, but it was very rarely that they ever spoke two words to each other on the very days that they lived in the same house. they could not be trusted to be together, let alone apart. it was undoubtedly enough, his parents, negligent, they were the ones who he’d inherited his inability to trust. he knew, it was not something quite so natural, but grown and harvested in him after so many years.
lily was different. she had influenced, nurtured and brought out the best possible side of him, and as consequence, she was the only one allowed to see it. they continued through and into the gardens, her elbow linked in with his. it was the first sight alone that had severus already trying his best not wrinkle his nose in annoyance; the groups of crying fourth years, but really? crying in public about your relationship problems was just embarrassing… and pitiful. his eyes wandered the rest of the setting, eying the people first. a few that gave him funny, surprised looks, though undoubtedly shook their heads, thinking that this was just a friend-date. he caught a few friendly faces, looking over at the primped up flowers and the large roomy space they had laid out for dancing. merlin… dancing. he didn’t really want to think about that part of the night, though he imagined lily to be a great dancer. these were his thoughts when lily turned so suddenly and raced into his chest. his arms flew out to catch her, gently helping her straighten herself up. it most definitely had to do with those eyeball pokers she called shoes on her feet. his expression changed quickly from worry to one of absolute surprise when she began rambling a list of thank yous. he wasn’t sure how to even react, but he smiled a little gently towards her, for he couldn’t even get a word in between her rambles. he had to sort of stand there, and follow through. he could not supposed how she had randomly decided he was worthy of so many thanks, but he could tell she was grateful for his appearance tonight, that was for sure. ”lily,– it’s nothing, really. you know I’d help you out whenever you needed it, getting dressed up is … annoying but I’d do it a thousand times over if you needed a… if you needed me.” he’d nearly said friend before he had stopped himself. would she catch it? though it wasn’t a big difference in words, he felt it was significant. especially, tonight. he felt his nerves creeping up on him again, twisting somewhere in the pit of his stomach. his back collar was getting itchy again, and he pulled on it. he smiled at her again. ”please, no more thank yous. sounds like it took out all the breath in you” he teased a little. "should we get a drink, or... a table... I'm not exactly sure how these things must work" he admitted awkwardly.

as he answered her, lily just rolled her eyes and smiled. she had nothing to say to that because between the two of them they knew it was true. but she knew perfectly well that if severus could bump up his attitude a few notches, perhaps not as many as those of sirius and james, and took some time in his appearance, he'd be the school's biggest charmer. at the same time, he then wouldn't be the severus she knew and enjoyed spending time with. he'd be more like someone such as sirius, and that was a thought which could easily send a shiver down her spine. and anyway, why should she step in when he seemed perfectly content with the life he was leading? and of course there was always that small bit of a green monster that came out of hiding whenever lily saw him smiling around another girl. not that such a thing had ever happened to her knowledge, or at least while she'd been around. perhaps once though, and that little green monster had been more like a pesky little fly than anything else.
as lily righted herself she smiled at severus letting herself calm down from her small little explosion. she wasn't quite sure what that had been about, but thankfully sev seemed to be basically unfazed by her outburst. should we get a drink, or... a table... I'm not exactly sure how these things must work lily let out a small laugh at severus's attempt to be cordial, and she just shook her head. well i would personally rather dance than sit or get a drink. i can sit all i want in my classes and drink all i care to drink.... any time of the day. but dancing and especially with you isn't something i'm passing up. the image of severus snape trying to dance floated in her mind and she couldn't help but to let out a slightly inaudible giggle which most likely sounded more like a mouse squeaking than someone laughing. but of course, if you don't want to that's fine with me... she sent him a small shrug and attempted to look a bit down and depressed.
of course she'd never seen severus dance before, and she wasn't even sure if he could dance, which worried her only slightly. but this feeling was overcome by the happiness she had in her to simply go out onto the floor, dance, and have fun. she was also less likely to run into a certain you-know-who-with-the-annoying-neverending-asking-lily-out-on-dates kid. though last she'd heard he hadn't even asked anyone else to the ball. but that'd been a good couple days earlier and since she hadn't exactly been paying much mind to him or sirius, who seemed to be her key messenger of all things james potter, she didn't know what he was up to anymore. not that she exactly minded.
lily ran a hand through her hair once, suddenly overcome with annoyance that she hadn't done something prettier with it. but of course, there wasn't anyone to impress here. unless of course the love of her life suddenly walked right in front of her this very minute and then yes, she would have some problems. the trouble was, was that she had no idea who the love of her life was. when she saw him, she'd be sure he was truly right. but the likelihood of this happening at the opening ball was close to nothing. and if someone did cross her path, they'd really have to do something to impress her. then again it wasn't like she'd leave severus standing all by himself. but all of this was just ridiculous, she was making up ideas in her mind, making up fantasies of what could be.
it wasn't exactly everyday that lily thought of boys, men and the future. and she wasn't exactly sure why the opening ball was bringing these all to the front of her mind, and she really didn't like it. but at the same time she worried about all of it, of herself. what if she didn't find someone to stand beside her? what if she got left behind? what if she ended up a bartender at some cheap and disgusting muggle bar? or, what if she didn't end up an auror? then of course all her questioning wrapped up with one easy question, why was she even thinking about this sort of thing in this moment? only a little bit had passed since she'd implied she'd rather dance than sit or drink - of which she knew severus would rather choose to sit and get a drink - than she had started pulling him out towards the crowd of people dancing. she wasn't exactly sure if she wanted to show him off - though his dancing might let this down a bit - or if she just wanted to dance with him or simply dance. but if he was about to argue with her or complain about dancing, she simply wasn't in the mood. notes, I HAVE NO IDEA HOW THIS CAME OUT but i didn't go back through and edit so it might be bad idkidkidk words, nine hundred something
